Off-Campus Research And Career Exploration
Ingenuity supports students interested in cutting-edge research and development in the fields of science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM). These programs connect students with opportunities to engage with university faculty and researchers throughout Baltimore City’s most prestigious universities and research institutions.
The Research Experience
The Ingenuity Research Program is a 3-year sequential curriculum spanning sophomore through senior years. As the program progresses, the intensity of the program’s curriculum also increases. The primary goal is for student investigators to plan and implement their own scientific research project. The program enables students to be creative, independent thinkers, refine their communication skills, produce high-quality written work and achieve admission to top collegiate programs; in general, it helps prepare them for their future careers. The program is open to any Ingenuity student (in good academic standing, see above) who wishes to apply, as the curriculum is designed to meet students’ individual needs and ability levels.
During the Research Practicum phase of the program, a fifteen-month time span, students work with mentors- professionals in scientific fields- to develop independent research projects. Students contribute to the body of research and, in some cases, have their work acknowledged in peer-reviewed journals. As seniors, they are expected to submit the results of their work to competitions, including the Siemens Competition and the Intel Science Talent Search, two of the nation’s most prestigious and financially rewarding pre-college contests. Recognition from the Intel Science Talent Search is based on “evidence of research ability, scientific originality and creative thinking.”
Research Mentors and Partners
Ingenuity maintains strong partnerships with the following universities and institutions to provide students with access to over 100 research mentors throughout Baltimore City.
